The King of Bacon Street is the nickname of Charlie Burns. He died at the age of 96 in 2012. He was a prominent local figure and president of Repton Boxing Club in Bethnal Green. A first portrait was made by Ben Slow in 2013 when Charlie was still alive. Ben is a London-based artist that "is inspired by the colourful characters he meets on his travels" and his works tend to celebrate local personalities, many unknown outside their communities.

The portrait was later vandalized and replaced by the current one that can be seen today. Black and white portraits are a characteristic of Ben Slow. In the next post I'll show you the old portrait that today no longer exists ...

... and this is the old portrait by Ben Slow of Charlie Burns. Located in Bacon Street, the work was originally done in 2010. It survived at least until late 2013, when i took this picture
