DSCREET // Electrified owls
Back in London from my last trip to Milan. It's now time to talk about the electrified owls that can be seen in many shapes and colours in East London. They are made by Australian artist Dscreet. According to his website, he started his career on the street as a graffiti writer. The owl is an evolution of that. Rather than writing his feature fonts, he developed a unique symbol - the owl - as his distinctive tag. And he started tagging a lot. There are many in the Shoreditch area. The strong colours and the style are cartoonesque, highlighting probably his origins in the graffiti world. I noticed that, in the transition from pure font graffiti to street art, you can find many comic-like objects and subjects. This is what I understood last week in Milan, where the scene is more geared towards graffiti and cartoonesque murals are relatively more common than in London. Reason for that? Still investigating
