ROADTRIP UGANDA

28 December 2013 - 7 January 2014

ARRIVAL (Sat 28 Dec-13)

We arrive in Kampala on Saturday evening at 10.30pm and we head directly to our hostel in Kampala (Red Chilli Hostel) after having cleared immigration and collected the luggage. Excitement is high, especially for the few ones who touched the African soil for the first time. On the way to the hostel the scenery of Kampala by night provides the first impression ... clean but rather dark. At the hostel we settle for the night in very Spartan but clean rooms. Before going to bed it's time to taste the first Ugandan beer. Our preference goes immediately for the "Nile Special" in a 500ml bottle. Definitively a top-notch beer which helps the 19 members of the group to get to know each other.

DAY 1 (Sun 29 Dec-13)

Good morning and good bye Kampala. The tough wake-up at 8.00am the day after leaves everyone red-eyed. During breakfast our seven 4x4 cars are delivered. They are all Toyota Rav4, a small but sturdy and reliable car, particularly easy to repair. The procedure of embarking the luggage takes about an hour. Then when Nicole and Dustin arrives from Jinja (they arrived in Uganda a few days before) we are ready to go. Getting out of Kampala in a convoy is proven to be easier than expected. One of the cars has a local driver (he will stay with us only for 3 days) who leads us through the city jungle. Kampala's traffic hits us when we got stuck for a while but in about an hour we are out in the countryside heading north to the Murchison Falls National Park. The landscape is rather uneventful but still exciting as our first glimpse of Africa.

The sleeping rhinos. The first stop is at a petrol station to buy some food and water. Then we stop at the Rhino Sanctuary. This is a reserve where rhinos are bred in order to re-introduce them in the local environment. Rhinos completely disappeared in Uganda following Idi Amin times in late 70s. The reserve has a hefty $35 price tag per person but our Head of Negotiations (Mr Dan Fishel) does his best and in 45min of firm and persistent negotiations, the price is reduced to $20. A ranger escorts us walking in the park where the rhinos are. It’s mid-day and it’s hot, so when we find the rhinos there is a bit of disappointment as they are sleeping in the shadows under a bush. Not good for pictures. It’s the first day, we are 21 people and everything takes double the time.

Off-road madness. Before exiting the reserve we have to take the first tough decision. To reach our lodge in the Northern part of the Murchison Falls Park we need to choose between a longer route which takes 5 hours or a shorter off-road route through the park which requires less time.  No matter what, we have to catch the last ferry at 7pm to cross the river Nile. Obviously we go for the riskier choice. We start to accelerate and as we hit the park we realize that we need to cruise at least 70 km/h on a bumpy road to catch the ferry. Panic starts to spread around. If we lose the ferry we will be stranded at night in the middle of the jungle! We let the first car to drive faster to stop the ferry while the other ones stay behind. The road is tough and very slippery. On the way Nonno’s car has an accident and skids for a while before landing in the middle of the road (memories from the people inside the car tell about the car turning upside-down a few times but that does not seem to match reality … ). Luckily the damages are small, a few scratches for the people and a broken tire. There is no time to repair it and Nonno continues to drive for another hour with a broken tire until we reach the ferry. We catch the ferry at the very last minute as it was already leaving when our first car stopped it. In a few minutes we embark all the cars on the ferry (well, calling it ferry is generous as it was nothing more than a small raft) and finally it’s time to laugh. On the northern bank of the river Nile we “heal our wounds” and repair the cars. Then it’s another hour in the pitch dark before we reach our lodge at around 9pm.

End of the day. At the lodge there is only time to run a lottery on who will get the tents and who gets the room with en-suite bathroom (for the records, the guy who is writing this note got the tent and had to face his very angry girlfriend…). Then there is time for a very quick dinner before everybody collapse in bed.

Gorilla trekking. Probably the most amazing wildlife experience in Africa

An example of one of the road where we will have to drive

Hopefully this will not happen to one of us ... and if it happens let's hope the one is Nonno, so we will all have a nice laugh

Peggy

Peggy

One of the new additions to the team, Peggy was on the watchlist. Despite his traditional lazy nature (e.g. he loves his home sofa) he immediately showed great excitement and unlimited stamina until he lost the keys to one of the cars. After that experience he was so humiliated that for 2 days he didn’t speak to anyone and barely touched food in an attempt to expiate his mistake.

Nonno

Nonno

As usual Nonno finds his way to hide when things get tough. After the first day, when he nearly destroyed the car, Nonno disappeared for a couple of days claiming the usual sickness. But his spirit came back towards the end of the adventure as he was particularly touched by the contact with the local population and was very inspired by meeting Father Gaetano.

Torsten

Torsten

The German precision that continually tried to rationalize whatever possible in an erratic adventure with an irrational girlfriend. It is rumoured he took over 15,000 photos to be sure not to miss anything.

Fumagalli

Fumagalli

The irrational girlfriend of the German precision this time did not perform any stage-dives nor lick someone’s head but remains a key element of the team.

Vale

Vale

Chatty Vale immediately seizes the opportunity to bother people sleeping in the cars by using the walkie-talkie system to broadcast "Radio Roadtrip Uganda", airing music and dedicating inappropriate songs to members of the team. She also passionately ensure Peggy feels guilty for the rest of his time for having lost the keys.

Tosca

Tosca

The yougest of the group is also the most intrepid. Memorable moments of her are: doing the safari on top of the roof of the car (while it was being driven), getting a few metres from the elephants to take a picture or going on the gorilla trekking in the jungle only with a thin, white shirt …

Frac

Frac

The official porter of the group, Frac demonstrates his teamwork in carrying the luggage of other members of the team. On 1st of January is possessed by an unexpected to-do attitude that leads him to go biking, trek the chimps in the forrest and hike a mountain … al within 10 hours

Dan

Dan

The Head of Negotiations showed impressive skills by negotiating down every single payment. It is estimated that each member of the group saved on average $98.56 thanks to Dan’s effort, which Dan then quietly rewarded himself with by applying a 5% success fee

Revelli

Revelli

Revelli only seemed to realise she was actually in Africa towards the end of the adventure. Despite that Revelli survives everything without any discomfort, including an almost car accident and all the bumpy roads, the most memorable moment was when we visited Father Gaetano's mission... after two hours of explanation about how Father Gaetano had built the school and hospital, she asked if the building was a gym … We would have paid to see Father Gaetano reply to her “No, the gym is over there".

Coscialunga

Coscialunga

The Coscialunga that we know, she even manages to touch a gorilla when the rule is to not get closer than 7 meters

Mikael

Mikael

In Uganda Mikael confirms his nickname of "Old Oak": reliable in driving and sturdy in any other practical activity, he often recover his batteries by taking an nap in any possible place

Daniele

Daniele

Daniele physically collapsed and is forced to pull-out just before the gorilla trekking but becomes the hero of the adventure when he decide to do it alone the day after despite fever, nausea and diarrhea. During his trek, Daniele has to constantly stop to vomit and [omissis]. As result, it takes to him more than 4 hours to spot the gorillas because they try constantly to move away from him, disgusted by the odours.

Sere

Sere

Our lorry driver … comfortable in turning a car on with just a screwdriver

Augustus

Augustus

Profoundly touched by Father Gaetano as testified by this picture ...

Nim

Nim

The latin lover of the group. In Uganda he manages to seduce even a nun, who felt so in love to ask him to stay. He kindly turned the offer down prefering to return to the boring London life

Anna

Anna

Laid back and relaxed, Anna came to this adventure with a truly backpacking spirit which played pretty well.

Crrisstina

Crrisstina

Crrisstina normally likes to travel in-style. This time she had to get her hands dirty and had to step up with numerous hours of off-road driving. Risked an injury when Nonno nearly crashed the car

Eleonora

Eleonora

The dreamer of the group, the one constantly touched by the beautiful landscapes and the welcoming population. Her senses are constantly inspired by the mix of sounds, colours and odours while the others just perceive the noises of the traffic and the stinks of the local fish market

DAY 2 (30 Jan 2013)

Hunting the lions. The day starts very early at 6.00am when most of our cars head to the northern part of the Murchison National Park for a self-drive safari. Despite they said Ugandan parks are not comparable with the traditional “Discovery Channel” parks of South Africa, as Botwsana or Namibia, we are very lucky: we immediately encounter a family of giraffes and after 20 minutes we spot a large group of elephants who are heading towards us. The good thing about Ugandan parks is that it is not officially prohibited to jump off the car (at your risk and peril, not the safest thing to do…). We stop the car and enjoy the show: we see them crossing the road very close to us. Murchison may not have a large animal variety (e.g. no rhinos, zebras, springbok and oysters) but the quantity of animals is pretty good with herds of buffalos, antelopes, warthogs. In the later part of the morning our effort starts to focus on spotting the lions. We have neither a map of the park nor any idea where the lions are. We start our “hunt” by asking every human being where lions are. After a few enquiries we understand that they have been spotted close to Lake Albert the night before. We start heading towards that direction driving with Tosca sitting on the roof of the car for better spotting (again, not the safest thing …) and as a prey to attract the lions. Finally we saw them following another tourist car ... they are hunting a number of gazelle but as we arrive. We get off the car and start taking pictures furiously ... not really the best behaviour and infact a local guide badly treat us telling that not only we are making a lot of noise, but also, by getting off the cars, we are ruining the lions' hunt and search for food. This because lions are not distracted by cars (which they see as a single animal) but when humans get off the cars, they see multiple animals and get distracted from their search for food. We leave the lions a bit humiliated (though we truly deserved the lesson) and drive quickly towards the river Nile where a boat is waiting to bring us to the famous Murchison Falls. The drive is hectic and one car is lost in the park. As result, we have to delay the boat by one hour.

Cruise on the Nile. (to be continued)
